Welcome, welcome, welcome!  I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with you and your child this year.  Second grade is such an important foundational year for your child and I am excited about the many new skills he/she will acquire.  What a truly exciting year this will be!

A little background:  I attended Calvin College and received my degree in elementary education from Grand Valley State University, graduating cum laude.  I also received my Master's Degree from Grand Valley State University (GVSU).  I am married to Dave and we have 3 married adult children and 2 grandchildren.

Our web site:  Explore every inch of our website.  Familiarize yourself with each of our categories and sub-categories.  There you will find valuable  information which will allow you to keep up with your child's lessons as well as various classroom activities.

Math:  Your child will need the following coins for our math lessons to be sent to school in a zip lock baggie:

4 quarters, 10 dimes, 10 nickels, 20 pennies   (Please label with your child's name).

Backpacks:  Everyday a backpack is needed.  It is the best way I have found for notes, papers, and other items to get safely home and back to school again.  It's an easy way to help all of us stay organized.

Parental involvement:  After we get the school year underway, and the routine down, there will be several opportunities for you to be involved with your child's school experience.  Our number one opportunity is to have parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. come in and listen to children read their Book Buddies. I would love to have lots of parents or other family members helping us with this important task.  Please watch for more opportunities in upcoming posts and newsletters.

Homework:  After the children become accustomed to our second grade routine, I will begin to send homework home.  Please make sure that your child completes the homework in a timely fashion, as homework is a crucial part of our second grade curriculum.

Behavior Management:  My goal is never to punish.  Instead, I want the children to learn that life is choices.  I believe that there is so much potential in our children and I want to give each child an opportunity to fulfill his potential.  Part of this process is learning that we are not an "island", but part of a whole.  I consider each case on an individual basis and I always try to be fair, but consistent...always for the greater good of the class.

Please take a look around our website and learn what we're all about!
